Two finished model trees from the German maker HEKI, eleven centimeters tall. The olive is a species that cannot be mistaken in a scene: it has a short, twisted trunk, a low-set crown and leaves with a silvery gray cast. On a layout or diorama it therefore establishes at once where the subject is set, and two pieces are enough to make clear that this is not a Central European landscape.

How to work with the trees

The trees are pushed into a pre-drilled hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. In a grove plant them in rows at regular spacing and ideally on a terraced slope, as that is exactly how olives are grown. Do not put saturated green grass under the trees, as that would spoil the whole impression; use dry growth, stones and dust instead. Spread the flattened crown carefully with your fingers after unpacking and tilt the trunk slightly.

Who the set is for

For builders of Mediterranean scenes and southern dioramas and for modelers who want to place a scene unambiguously in a warm landscape. The pair of trees can also be split, with one used by a building and the other further back, so that the same species repeats within the scene. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
