Two poplars 27 cm tall

Finished poplar models from Heki, two pieces, each 27 cm tall. Nothing is built or painted; the trees are simply set in place on the scene. A pair of poplars of equal height has a particular value on a diorama: stood facing each other they frame the view like a gateway and naturally lead the eye to whatever is between them.

How tall these trees are

In 1:87 scale the height corresponds to roughly 23.5 meters, in 1:72 scale to about 19.4 meters and in 1:35 scale to approximately 9.5 meters. That matches a mature tree which will overtop ordinary buildings and equipment on a scene. Bear that in mind with a display case too: the thickness of the base has to be added to the height of the tree.

Where a pair comes into its own

• At the entrance to a farm, by a gate, by a bridge or by a wayside chapel, where the trees frame the view.
• Along a road, a field track or a canal as the start of a longer avenue.
• On the windward side of a building, where poplars were planted as protection from the wind.
• At the edge of a scene, where tall greenery hides the join of a backdrop and closes the view in at the sides.

Setting in place and care

Drill a hole in the surface for the trunk so that the tree stands firm and upright without support, and secure the joint with glue. With a pair it is worth trying both positions dry first and only then drilling, because the distance between them decides the whole view. Hide the transition between the trunk and the ground with scatter or grass. Clear the dust from the crowns occasionally with a soft brush and avoid touching them with a cloth. The base, the glue, the paints and scenic scatter are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
