A set of two tunnel portals for a single-track line in N gauge, that is in 1:160 scale, from the German manufacturer HEKI. The portals are plastic and there are two pieces in the package, so they cover the entry and the exit of one tunnel. A portal is the face of the structure: it closes the opening in the terrain and hides the bare framework of the layout behind it. Neither the whole tunnel nor its inner lining is included in the package.
First run the tallest and longest car that will travel the line through the opening dry. In N gauge any discrepancy shows at once, so when seating the portal go by the center line of the track, not by the outline of the terrain. Glue it with cement for plastic or with white PVA glue and shape the terrain to it last, so that no gap stays between the face and the hill. Stone comes alive with a dark wash run into the joints and a light drybrush on the edges, and a faint soot smudge above the arch works well.
It suits builders of N gauge layouts with a single-track line and diorama builders who want the end of a tunnel finished without modeling stone. A pair of portals covers one tunnel, so both entries look the same.
The portals are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and other material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
