About product

Supermarine Spitfires in Soviet Service 1:72 (Tiger Head Models)

A set of decals in 1:72 scale devoted to Spitfires in the armament of the Soviet Air Force. It is not a model of the airplane, but a sheet of markings on its own meant for finishing a kit that has already been built. Tiger Head Models is a Turkish manufacturer that concentrates on decal sheets and resin accessories with subjects that ordinary kits lack. The exact make-up of the schemes is given in the manufacturer's data.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter with an elliptical wing and a liquid-cooled V engine, which went through the whole of the Second World War in many progressively stronger versions. Besides the Royal Air Force, a number of other users received it under wartime deliveries to the Allies — among them the Soviet Air Force, where the machines served mainly with fighter and air defense units. Soviet Spitfires differ from the British ones not only in national insignia but also in the way they were re-marked and maintained in field conditions, which makes them a rewarding and visually distinct modeling subject.

Building and painting tips

Soviet schemes tend to be marked by use, so it pays to work with shades on them: lighten the base color slightly on the upper surfaces and, after the decals, add a filter or a thin wash in the scribed lines. Apply the decals themselves over a gloss surface, add a decal fixer and finally go over everything with a matte clear coat, so that the markings blend in with their surroundings. If you weather the model with pigments, do it only after flattening, otherwise the dust will catch on the carrier film of a decal too and the border will be visible.

Who the set is for

  • those interested in Eastern Front aviation and in wartime deliveries to the Allies
  • modelers who want a well known British type in unusual insignia
  • builders of several Spitfires who need to tell the individual examples apart
  • modelers working with a gloss surface, a decal fixer and a matte clear coat

This is a sheet of decals on its own. The kit, paints, clear coats and weathering products are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, these are decals only. Obtain a plastic Spitfire kit in 1:72 scale separately.

The particular versions are not stated here, because they have not been verified. The Soviet Air Force operated several versions of the Spitfire; you will find the make-up of the schemes in the manufacturer's data.

It is not necessary, but it helps. On a model with pronounced scribed lines it ensures that a decal follows the shape of the surface and that no bubble is left on it.

Always work over a gloss clear coat, settle a decal with plenty of water and squeeze the excess out with a soft cloth from the center outward. Silvering comes from air trapped under the carrier film.
