About product

A set of RAF wheel chocks 1:32, printed by 3D technology (Tiger Head Models)

Small airfield accessories in 1:32 scale from the Turkish brand Tiger Head Models. The set contains wheel chocks of the British type from the period of the Second World War — that is the chocks that were put under the wheels of a standing aircraft so that it would not roll away during an engine run or while standing on a sloping surface. It is an accessory for models and dioramas, not a model of an airplane. According to the manufacturer the parts are made by printing with 3D technology; the exact number of pieces and the dimensions are given in the manufacturer's data.

Why it pays off

An aircraft set on a stand with no surroundings at all looks neutral. All it takes, though, is to put chocks under the main wheels and the model suddenly looks parked rather than cut out of a picture. In 1:32 scale this kind of small thing is easy to read and it moves the result on cheaply: the chocks have a distinct shape, a rope or chain connection and in service they tended to be scuffed and dirty, so they offer room for a patina. They suit even the cases where a model stands alone with no base — for example just on a board with a taxiway marked out on it.

Tips for working it

Rinse the printed parts and let them dry well, cut the small supports off with a sharp scalpel and sand the spot with fine paper. They are glued with super glue; this material does not react to cement for plastic. Before painting, apply a thin layer of primer, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth surface. You imitate wood by applying oil or enamel streaks along the grain over a light base and going over them with a thin brown wash. At the end add dust and muddy marks according to the setting the model stands in.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas and airfield scenes in 1:32 scale
  • modelers who want to set a finished model into a setting
  • those interested in the Royal Air Force of the Second World War period
  • modelers working with printed parts and super glue

These are accessories on their own. The model of the airplane, a base, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The exact number is not stated here, because it has not been verified. You will find the figure in the manufacturer's data.

No. They are supplied in the color of the material and have to be sprayed with primer and painted.

With super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for polystyrene does not bite into this material.

In shape this is the British type. For another air force it is usable only where a small deviation does not matter; for an accurate build we recommend comparing against a period photograph.
