About product

Vickers Wellington Mk.IC - airborne radar antennas 1:48 (Tiger Head Models)

A supplementary set from the Tiger Head Models brand in 1:48 scale for models of the British twin-engine bomber Vickers Wellington in the Mk.IC version. The package does not contain a model of the aircraft; it is a set of parts with which you add to a finished machine the antenna array of an airborne search radar from the early period of its use.

The real subject

The Wellington was among the pillars of British bomber aviation at the start of the Second World War. It became famous for the geodetic structure of its airframe, designed by Barnes Wallis: the framework was a net of light sections crossed into diamonds and covered with fabric. Such an airframe took surprisingly extensive damage and stayed in the air even with large holes in its covering. The Mk.IC version was the numerously built form with altered defensive armament and it became the basis for a range of further modifications. Thanks to its roomy nose and decent endurance it was precisely the Wellington that became a suitable carrier for the first airborne radars, whose antennas at that time were still clearly visible outside the airframe, which makes them a rewarding modeling detail.

Building and painting tips

The antennas are thin by their nature and break easily, so release them from their sprue or supports only just before fitting and work over a surface from which you will find a part if it falls. Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, let them dry and apply a thin primer. They are glued with super glue; use tweezers when fitting them and mark the position lightly in advance, because once dry no correction is possible. Paint the antennas in the same shade as the surrounding covering and highlight the edges lightly, otherwise they will blend in at scale. There is almost no need to weather them, as this is freshly fitted equipment.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the Wellington in 1:48 scale who want a less usual version
  • Modelers with an interest in early British airborne radars
  • More experienced builders used to fine and fragile parts
  • Collectors of accessories for British Second World War bombers

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is only a supplementary set of antennas that you fit onto an already built model in 1:48 scale.

The geodetic structure of its airframe, from a crossed net of light sections under a fabric covering. Thanks to it the aircraft took considerable combat damage.

Release them only just before fitting, work with tweezers over a surface and glue with super glue. Mark the position lightly in advance.

Rather not. Working with very thin parts calls for a steady hand and experience with resin accessories.
