Wheels with sagged tires for the Handley Page Hampden bomber in 1:48 scale, for kits of the ICM brand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The wheels of a standing aircraft never have a perfectly circular outline. The weight of the machine compresses the tire at the point of contact with the surface, the sidewall bulges slightly and the tread spreads out in the contact patch. In photographs it is hardly registered, but on a model the difference shows at once: a machine with perfectly round wheels looks as though it were floating a couple of millimeters above its base, whereas sagged rubber sets it firmly on the surface. On a twin-engined bomber with a matching takeoff weight this impression is more pronounced still than on light types.
The set is prepared for the Hampden from kits of the ICM brand and replaces the original injection molded parts. Besides the flattening of the contact area, replacement wheels usually also improve the rendering of the tread and the breakdown of the wheel disc, that is things that on a model in a display case low in front of a viewer's eye are well open to inspection.
When gluing, watch the rotation, so that the flattened part really does rest on the base and does not end up turned to one side. The axle is best lined up before the glue flashes off, because after that the wheels will not move and the model could lean.
A flattened tire is among the modifications with the best ratio between work put in and final impression: fitting takes a few minutes but changes the way a model stands on its base. It shows above all on a diorama with a flat airfield apron, where a gap under the wheels would give itself away at once. Anyone building a machine on grass can support the effect further by letting the wheels sink lightly into the growth.
