An injection-molded plastic figure of a Soviet officer of the Second World War in 1:16 scale from Trumpeter. For an adult figure the 1:16 scale corresponds to a height of roughly one hundred and ten millimeters, that is, the format modelers call one hundred and twenty millimeters. Compared with the usual 1:35 scale this is a fundamental difference: at this size the expression of the face, the cut of the uniform and the small items of gear are all visible, so the figure stands up as a display piece in its own right.
The Soviet officer corps went through a marked change during the war. In 1943 shoulder boards returned and the uniform took on the form that most people associate with the Red Army today: a fitted tunic, a map case, a pistol holster and a cap with a stiff crown. An officer is therefore a rewarding subject, because several period details that you will not find on ordinary infantry meet in a single figure.
Fill and sand any seams where the parts join before painting; in a larger scale every unworked joint shows. Build the flesh up from a darker base toward the highlights, not the other way round. Do not mix the khaki of the uniform too richly, because the period cloth was felted and matte, so a slightly faded shade and gentle shading of the folds help. The leather parts can take a sheen, the metal gear cannot. Paint the eyes with the finest brush and rather in two passes, because correcting them later is difficult.
