About product

Honda RA 272, F1 1965 - a 1:20 kit (Tamiya, Grand Prix Collection)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the Honda RA 272 Formula 1 car in the classic Tamiya scale of 1:20, the traditional choice for F1 models. The finished model measures approximately 200 mm. In the box you will find rubber tires with Goodyear lettering, a finely rendered V12 engine and an engine cover split into three parts, just as the real car had it. The decal sheets allow you to build the winning car of Richie Ginther as well as the car of his team mate Ronnie Bucknum.

The real subject

Honda came into Formula 1 as a complete newcomer and with the RA 272 took its first win in 1965, at the Mexican Grand Prix. Richie Ginther led the race from start to finish. It was a historic milestone: the first win for a Japanese car, a Japanese engine and a Japanese team in Formula 1. Technically the car was remarkable for its engine: a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter V12 mounted transversely behind the driver, an unusual solution that came out of Honda motorcycle practice and was among the most powerful power units in the field at the time.

Building and painting tips

A Formula 1 model is a different discipline from a tank or an aircraft. The body has to be perfectly smooth and glossy: a gloss paint is sprayed and then polished, and gloss shows absolutely every mistake, every seam left unsanded, every speck of dust. Nothing hides under weathering. So take it slowly: fill, sand with fine paper, spray a primer, check it against the light, and only then apply the paint in thin coats. The white and red Honda scheme deserves a good white base. The decals are a crucial part of the job and have to settle onto the rounded surfaces of the body and the engine cover, so a decal softener is practically a necessity here, otherwise silvery bubbles appear. A proven sequence: a gloss coat under the decals, the decals, then a clear coat over the decals and finally polishing, which gives the wet look of the Formula 1 cars of the period. The engine and the exhausts, by contrast, take light toning with metallic shades.

Who the model is for

  • Fans of historic Formula 1 and the era of 1.5-liter engines
  • Modelers who want to master a perfectly glossy surface and decals
  • Collectors of Japanese automotive and racing history
  • Patient builders, because nothing can be hidden on a glossy body
  • Modelers looking for a detailed model of a reasonable size (around 20 cm)

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

With this car Honda took its first Formula 1 win at the Mexican Grand Prix in 1965. It was also the very first triumph for a Japanese car, engine and team in F1.

We recommend one. The Formula 1 decals are extensive and have to settle onto the rounded surfaces of the body. Without a softener, silvery bubbles appear that show immediately under gloss varnish.

Sand the seams carefully, spray a primer, apply the gloss paint in thin coats, lay the decals and cover them with a clear coat. The surface is then polished to a wet look.

The build is straightforward in its engineering, but a perfectly glossy body and extensive decals call for patience. Unlike a weathered military model, gloss hides no mistake.
