About product

The Spitfire that carried beer to Normandy

After the landings in Normandy practically everything was lacking at the improvised forward airfields, and among the things most keenly missed was beer. The pilots solved it in their own way: they slung barrels or rinsed-out drop tanks under the wings and carried the load from the rear areas straight to the units in France. The improvisation was jokingly described as a depth charge modification of the triple X brand, and the aircraft earned their name from the brewers' drays.

The kit recalls this episode in a generous scale. The finished model has a span of about 469 millimeters, consists of 448 parts, and resin additions are provided alongside the plastic moldings: a pair of barrels with lids, two different nose cowlings, underwing pylons and a drop tank. Three color options are prepared.

The subject is the Spitfire in the Mk.IXc version, which came about as a quick answer to the German Fw 190. A Merlin engine with a two-stage supercharger was fitted into the airframe and with it the aircraft regained its advantage at high altitude. The letter c in the designation belongs to the universal wing, which allowed the armament to be made up of machine guns and cannons according to a unit's needs.

The extent of the parts and the size of the finished piece make the build a project for a longer period, suited rather to a more experienced hand. Glue, paints and filler are not enclosed and have to be obtained separately.

Anyone looking for a striking exhibit for a display case gets a combination of a famously familiar shape with a story that is not commonly met on models. The barrels under the wings will prompt a question sooner than the color scheme does.

FAQ

After the invasion in France, barrels or rinsed-out drop tanks were slung under the wings of fighters and the pilots carried beer to the forward units this way. The modification was jokingly called a depth charge fit.

In 1:24 scale the span comes out at around 469 millimeters. Count on a display case of matching dimensions.

Rather not. The high parts count and the resin additions assume experience with gluing, sanding and painting.

Yes. The package contains the moldings, the resin parts and the material for the color schemes; the chemicals have to be obtained separately.
