An injection-molded plastic kit of a Formula 1 car in 1:24 scale from Revell. The model captures car number 2, which Lewis Hamilton drove in the 2010 season. The box contains over 100 parts, among them a multi-part V8 engine, the front and rear wings, the suspension, the cockpit, the monocoque and the diffuser, plus rubber tires, a sheet of waterslide decals and instructions for assembly and painting. The finished model measures roughly 21 cm.
The McLaren MP4-25 was the Formula 1 world championship car for the 2010 season, powered by a Mercedes V8. The driver pairing was Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Hamilton won three Grands Prix with the MP4-25, in Turkey, Canada and Belgium, and finished fourth in the final drivers' standings. The 2010 world championship title went to Sebastian Vettel with Red Bull, not to Hamilton; the MP4-25 is therefore not a title-winning car but a winning and very competitive one. It is characterized by its silver and red finish and dense sponsor graphics.
The kit is glued: use thin cement for plastic models and apply it sparingly. On a glossy racing car the rule is that gloss shows every mistake: seams, marks left by the sprue gates and small scratches all have to be sanded carefully and the surface polished before painting. Spray the body over a filler primer, apply the paint with an airbrush in several thin coats and let it cure properly. The extensive sponsor decals settle onto curved surfaces and transitions, so a decal softener is practically a necessity; without it a decal will lift or silvery bubbles will appear under it. Lay the decals on a gloss surface, coat them with clear varnish once they are dry and finally polish the surface with polishing compound. Weathering has no place here: on a Formula 1 car an imperfection cannot hide under dirt.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
