A large-scale plastic kit of the legendary American fighter-bomber McDonnell F-4C/D Phantom II in 1:32 from the firm Tamiya. From one box both versions can be built, the F-4C and the later F-4D. The kit is marked out by an unusual one-piece fuselage, which does away with the classic split into left and right halves and makes assembly without seams markedly easier. The landing gear legs are cast in metal, so that the heavy large-scale model stands stably, and they are complemented by rubber tires. The canopy and the air brake can be built open or closed. Included are extensive underwing stores (bombs, air-to-air missiles and pods), two crew figures and three marking options.
The F-4 Phantom II arose originally as a carrier fighter for the US Navy, but thanks to its enormous performance and load-carrying ability the air force ordered it immediately afterwards as well. It was a two-seat twin-engined machine, with the pilot in front and the weapon systems operator behind, and it became one of the symbols of the war in Vietnam, where it filled the role of fighter and of bomber. The F-4C was the first production version for the US Air Force, derived from the naval Phantom. The F-4D was its improved variant with avionics adapted directly to the needs of the air force, especially in navigation and more accurate bomb delivery. The Phantom then served all over the world for decades.
Decide right at the start whether you are building the F-4C or the F-4D; they differ in small parts and converting later tends to be laborious. Finish and paint the cockpits of both stations before you close the fuselage and fit the canopy. Mask the glazing carefully before spraying. On a model this large an airbrush and a primer pay off, because large surfaces never come out evenly with a brush. Apply the decals, of which the Phantom tends to have many, onto gloss varnish, so that no white film forms around them; only then give it a matte coat. Paint the underwing stores separately and hang them on the finished model. Degrease the metal landing gear legs and prime them, otherwise the paint will not hold on them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
