The combination modelers preparing a scene on the ramp reach for: a pod with an exposed gun compartment and with a mounting for the center station under the fuselage. Reskit offers it in the large 1:32 scale as an accessory for the Phantom in the C and D versions. According to the name the part is made by 3D printing.
The Phantom was designed as a carrier of guided missiles, but in a direct dogfight over Vietnam it turned out that a gun was missing. An underwing pod with a rotary cannon was a quick answer: it was carried under the fuselage, added weight and drag, but allowed fire at short range and against ground targets as well.
First think out the final scene, because an open bay makes sense mainly on a machine on the ground. Paint from the inside outward: first a darker base for the compartment, then mask it and only at the end get down to the outer shade of the body. Blur the transitions between the areas with an airbrush and finally add fine traces of wear in the places where the pod was handled.
The open compartment reveals the cluster of rotating barrels, which can fire off the whole supply of ammunition in under half a minute. That is precisely why ground crew went back to the pod after every flight, and a scene of ammunition being replenished belongs among the most rewarding subjects for the Phantom that can be built in a large scale.
There are no paints, glue or decals in the package.
