About product

Vortex generators for the BAE Hawk T.2 in 1:32 scale

This item is not an aircraft model but a small accessory. Vortex generators are small upright vanes on the surface of an airframe that stir the boundary layer and keep the flow attached to the surface even at higher angles of attack. On a model they are an unobtrusive but characteristic feature that an expert notices at once. The set is made by 3D printing, which with parts this small and thin is an advantage, because a printed part can be considerably finer than any injection-molded or cast equivalent. It is intended for a model of the BAE Hawk T.2 advanced trainer in 1:32 scale.

The real subject

The BAE Systems Hawk is a British advanced trainer and light combat aircraft with a single Rolls-Royce Adour engine. The Hawk T.2 version comes from the later development series of the type and serves for advanced training of combat pilots. Compared with earlier versions it has a digital cockpit with multifunction displays, a modified air intake and more modern onboard equipment that allows the systems of combat aircraft to be simulated in flight. The Hawk is among the most widespread trainers of its category and flies with a number of air forces around the world.

Building and painting tips

Before building, wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove residue of uncured resin. Cut the print supports off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, never break them off. Level the mating surfaces with sandpaper and sand wet with your airways protected. They are glued with super glue, because ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Apply a primer before painting, as paint would otherwise hold badly on a smooth part. The printed parts are very small, so work with tweezers over a mat and with plenty of light. Mark the positions in advance from the drawing, glue the individual vanes one at a time and always let a joint dry before starting the next.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the BAE Hawk T.2 in 1:32 scale
  • Those who take a model all the way down to the small features on the surface of the airframe
  • Builders used to working with very small parts and tweezers
  • Those interested in modern trainers

The accessory set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The basic kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They are small vanes on the surface of the airframe that stir the boundary layer and keep the flow attached to the surface even at higher angles of attack. That improves the behavior of the aircraft at low speeds.

It is not. It is a small accessory set, and the model itself has to be bought separately.

With super glue applied in a minimal amount, best on the tip of a toothpick or a piece of wire. Move the parts with tweezers and work over a mat so they do not get lost.

Yes. Wash the printed parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove residue of uncured resin, let them dry and spray them with primer. Without a base the paint rubs off smooth resin easily.
