Throughout the twentieth century the handwheel was the most ordinary control that engineering knew. It opened pipeline valves, raised a gun barrel, tightened the screws of presses and closed the hatches of tanks. On a model, though, it is exactly this part that suffers most from injection molding: the spokes come out as thick wedges and the rim loses its roundness. Thin sheet therefore looks considerably more convincing at a small scale than any plastic casting. A range of several diameters also has the advantage that you can pick wheels of the same character for one machine, so a scene does not look assembled from random sources.
Cut the wheels out of the sheet on glass, so that the edge does not bend, and level the burrs with a stroke of a file in one direction. Pick the smaller pieces up with smooth-jawed tweezers; serrated jaws will dent the metal. If you fit a wheel onto a wire run through the axis, you get both a firm joint and the right standoff from the wall. First free the surface of grease, then cover it with a primer suitable for smooth surfaces. Brighten the rim gently at the end, so that it stands out against darker surroundings.
