A base tends to be the last thing a modeler deals with, and yet it decides how the work looks on a shelf and in a photograph. Royal Model offers this shaped plinth as part of its line of diorama bases for 1:35 scale.
A finished model laid on a table looks like a component. A bounded surface turns it into an exhibit: it gives it clear limits, lifts it above its surroundings and decides where the scene is to be viewed from. With vignettes holding a single figure or a single vehicle, the base is at the same time the only carrier of the setting, so how it is laid out matters as much as the model itself. A smaller surface also enforces discipline: everything you put on it has to have a reason. A photograph of finished work also comes out better when the scene has an edge of its own and does not merge with the background of the table.
It pays to make the sides of the plinth different from the top surface: a dark uniform finish or stained wood closes the scene off optically and does not compete with it. Build the terrain on top in thin layers, so that you do not overgrow the edge, and keep the edge clean. Before you reach for pigments, think through where the main model will stand and leave the surface under it level.
The modeler builds the terrain and the finish themselves.
