The American truck of the two-and-a-half-ton weight class with drive to all three axles was the workhorse of supply. It carried ammunition, fuel, material and men, and that is exactly why it appears on dioramas more often than many a tank. The bed of these trucks was covered with a tarpaulin stretched over a bow frame; the cloth sagged between the bows, gathered along the sides and had its corners tied down. It is that soft shape that decides whether a model looks alive or like a box with a lid.

It will replace the tarpaulin from a kit, or cover a bed that you would otherwise have to fill with a load. The exact application and the fit on a particular model are described in the instructions of the maker of the set.
Cut any excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder back carefully, so that the definition of the folds is preserved. The part is not polystyrene and ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on it; use cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, wash and degrease the tarpaulin and apply a primer. Canvas is painted differently from sheet metal: it keeps to a matte shade, it is light on the crests of the folds and it holds shadow and dust in the hollows. It therefore pays to use darker toning into the folds and a gentle brightening of the edges, not a glossy uniform coat.
