An injection-molded plastic kit of the iconic French van Citroën Type HY in 1:35 scale - and yes, alongside paints and chemicals AK interactive also issues kits of its own, and this is one of them. The package holds over 120 plastic parts, a photo-etched fret, openable rear doors and a sliding side door (they can be built in the open position) and decals for four options from Cartograf. The markings cover the fire service, the police, civil defense and the postal service, and three types of beacon are included. The model captures the panel van built roughly from 1964 to the end of the 1960s - with a one-piece windshield, short chevrons on the radiator grille, a vertical handle on the sliding door and a square rear window.
The Citroën Type H (and its derivatives including the HY) was created after the Second World War as a simple, cheap and indestructible van for tradespeople. You recognize it at first glance: the corrugated panels of the body, the long snout of a nose, a low flat floor and hinged doors behind the cab. It was built for over thirty years and more than 473000 units were made. It became an icon of French streets - bakers, butchers and street traders drove it, and so did ambulances, police, fire services and the post office. To this day surviving vehicles are turned into mobile cafes and food trucks. That is exactly why public service is such a rewarding theme for a release: a civilian vehicle in the colors of state and municipal services.
Corrugated panels are a beauty and a trap - the surface has to be clean, because every mark of sandpaper will show. Sand the seams carefully and rather in small steps. Paint over a primer and with an airbrush; with the bold service colors (fire service red, police blue, postal yellow) reckon on their wanting a light undercoat, or they will not glow. Lay the decals on a gloss coat and fix them with a decal softener - on corrugated panels that is a necessity, or the decal will not settle into the grooves. Polish the clear beacon or coat it with gloss varnish. Weathering: a civilian vehicle need not be muddy - fine dust in the grooves, scuffed paint on the edges and a trace of oil under the engine are enough. Less is more here.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
