A model of a small farm wagon, of the kind the Italian brand Royal Model offers in two sizes. This item represents the smaller of them and serves as an accessory to a scene, not as a model of equipment.
Until the middle of the twentieth century a simple two-wheeled or four-wheeled wagon remained the basic means of transport in the countryside; in many areas of Europe motor equipment pushed it out only long after the war. The smaller type was used for short moves between the yard and the field, for hauling feed, firewood or implements, and its construction stayed practically the same for centuries. In a scene it therefore works as a reliable indicator of place and period, even with nobody sitting in it. It is also a rewarding carrier of small items: sacks, crates, a bundle of straw or a blanket thrown aside turn an empty bed into an inhabited space.
The most sensitive part is seating the wheels: stand them on a flat board and let the glue harden while the wagon stands on all its wheels, otherwise the lean can no longer be corrected. Wood comes to life if you draw a lighter tone over a brown base with a dry brush and bring out the joints with a dark run. Leave the ironwork cooler and lightly rusted, especially around the pins and the wheel hub.
