This set from Royal Model makes a kit of the oldest production form of the Panther more accurate. Photo-etched sheet replaces the surfaces that should be paper thin in scale, while resin adds the pieces of complicated shape that cannot be cast in a mold. The instructions are illustrated and proceed step by step. The set is intended for the Dragon kit.
The D form got under way at the beginning of 1943. You recognize it by the cylindrical commander's cupola projecting from the side of the turret and by the horizontal hinged flap of the hull machine gun, which was nicknamed the letterbox. Hung sheet-metal skirts protected the sides. The vehicles entered the fighting in July 1943 at Kursk and the debut turned out badly: the greater part of the losses was not down to the enemy but to failures of the transmission and fires in the engine compartment.
Finish the running gear with its overlapping wheels before the turn of the superstructure comes, otherwise you will not reach into the gaps. Attach the skirts at the very end; bent or missing ones look more credible than a perfectly straight row. Dust shades applied dry with a brush suit the bottom of the hull.
Without the plastic subject the set cannot be used. Paints, glues and pigments are separate goods.
