The enclosing wall of a park is a set piece that immediately places a scene in built-up surroundings and at the same time gives it a solid background. Royal Model offers it as a diorama accessory in 1:35 scale, that is as a piece of the setting, not as a model of a vehicle.
Masonry enclosures separated palace gardens, town parks, cemeteries and the grounds of middle-class villas from the street right across Europe. During the fighting at the end of the Second World War, walls like these turned into shelters, firing positions and obstacles that vehicles broke through. That is exactly why a park wall appears so often in dioramas of the liberation of French and German towns: it offers a natural divide between street and garden and allows figures to be placed on two different levels of the action.
Neither stone nor plaster is ever a single color. Lay the base down in a middle tone, then break the surface up with several translucent coats in warm and cool shades and finally bring out the joints with a flowing wash. The lower parts of a real wall always hold damp, moss and splashes of mud; in scale that means a darker band at the foot. A worn edge on the crown of the wall and a few missing pieces of masonry will give the structure its age.
