The equipment of a United States infantryman of the Second World War is summed up by this collection from Royal Model: pouches, helmets, straps, goggles and entrenching tools, executed as a combination of castings and etched metal. Neither figures nor a vehicle are included.
American infantry used a system of a belt and carrying straps, onto which magazine pouches, a canteen, a shovel and a bread bag were hung. The arrangement differed according to the task: a rifleman, a machine gunner and a medic each had a different combination. It is exactly the well-considered placement of these small items on a figure or on the fender of a vehicle that makes a scene look lived in and legible. Crews also hung personal baggage all over their machines.
Separate the castings from their blocks with a cutting saw and smooth the cut wet. Before you seat anything permanently, lay the equipment out on paper and think the placement through; an overloaded hull looks unconvincing. For canvas and leather surfaces, layering works well: a base tone, a dark accent into the folds and a dry brush on the edges. Add dust and mud with pigments at the very end, otherwise you will clog the fine detail of the buckles.
It is supplied as a collection of parts without a surface finish; coloring materials have to be bought as well.
