A set of pioneer tools with brackets for American tanks of the Second World War in 1:35 scale combines resin castings with photo-etched straps and buckles.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory for builders of Allied equipment. The resin castings carry the texture of both wood and metal, while the photo-etched components form the thin straps and clips that will not fit into an injection mold. You use them on a model you already have part-built.
The vehicles of the American army had their pioneer equipment arranged mostly around the outside of the hull, often on welded brackets and under straps with buckles. The axe, the pick, the shovel and the pry bar were exactly the equipment a crew could not do without in the field, and their arrangement differed from machine to machine and from unit to unit. Pictures from the front show that crews routinely moved the equipment around and supplemented it with their own material, from rolled tarpaulins to crates picked up along the way. It is that untidiness that makes a model come alive.
Remove the original shapes from the model and smooth the surface. Rinse the castings in soapy water and let them dry, and only then glue them. Shape the photo-etched straps over a cylindrical surface first, so that they follow the outline of the tool. For wood, a base in ocher covered with a brown oil glaze works well, and dark the metal surfaces down with a dark wash. A final dry brushing brings out the cutting edges and the corners that a crew would have kept bright.
