An injection-molded plastic model of the Soviet and Russian Typhoon class nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) in 1:350 scale from Hobby Boss. The sizeable hull is made up of two large halves; the package contains a stand for display and a photo-etched propeller. Unlike surface ships, a submarine has a smooth, uniform hull with a minimum of superstructure, so cleanliness of the surface and accuracy of the joints stand out.
Typhoon is the Western designation of the Soviet class of nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN). They are the largest submarines ever built, and their enormous volume gives the characteristic double hull, inside which two main pressure hulls lie side by side. The submarine was designed to carry intercontinental ballistic missiles covertly and for long patrols beneath the surface, including operations in Arctic regions. It was one of the icons of the Cold War.
The key thing is a clean joint between the two hull halves and perfect sanding of the seam on the smooth flank, as on a submarine every visible seam is conspicuous, so fill the joint and sand it back to a continuous surface. Separate the photo-etched propeller and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue. A submarine is painted mostly in a uniform dark color (black to dark gray), ideally with an airbrush, so that the coat is even. A fine wash in the grooves of the hatches and the free-flood openings will give the surface scale depth without overdone weathering. The model can be set on the supplied stand or treated as a section on the surface of the water.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
