Four BLU-1B incendiary bombs of the 750 lb class in the version with the MXU-469/B tail unit. Cast in resin in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
With American fire bombs it is not only the tank itself that sets the versions apart, but above all what the ground crew fitted to it before takeoff. The body stayed the same, the tail assemblies differed. This item carries the version designated MXU-469/B, and the brand lists it separately from the other variant, because the difference shows up well on a model and a photograph of a particular machine usually shows one of the two unambiguously.
A tank of the 750 lb class is in fact a thin sheet-metal shell filled with thickened fuel. It has no internal stiffness, which is why it was handled more carefully than an ordinary bomb. In pictures it looks smooth and light, on the mount it sags slightly, and the surface tends to be covered with greasy streaks from filling. All of that is a rewarding subject for weathering.
The count is enough for a full fit on a pair of multiple ejector racks, or for splitting between the wing and a diorama trolley. The 1:48 magnification is the ideal compromise for this type of ordnance: the main shapes are legible and yet the set does not become the dominant feature of the whole model.
Build the weathering up from a light surface: first an even covering color, then thin oil shading into the seams and finally matte streaks drawn from top to bottom. A gloss varnish would look out of place on this type of ordnance. At the end consider a light dusting with a pigment in a dry-earth shade along the lower edge of the body.
