The Browning in .50 caliber (12.7 mm) in the AN/M2 version was an aircraft machine gun, a lightened version with a thin barrel and a markedly higher rate of fire than the ground types. It became the standard armament of American combat equipment of the Second World War: in the wings and noses of fighters and as defensive armament on bombers. This is the fixed variant, that is the weapon built rigidly into the structure and aimed by the whole machine, with no grips and no sights for hand operation. Machine guns of exactly this kind are the ones built into the wings and engine cowlings of American fighters. Do not confuse it with the M2HB type, which is the ground version with a heavy barrel intended for vehicles and mounts, and which looks different.
