An injection-molded plastic kit from Hobby Boss represents the bomber version of the F-111, that is the machine with a variable-geometry wing in its strategic form. On this type the 1:48 scale means a large model with a big fuselage and a movable wing. The package holds a plastic kit meant to be glued together and painted.
The F-111 was the first production combat aircraft with a truly variable-geometry wing. The crew was two men sitting side by side, and in an emergency they escaped by jettisoning the whole cockpit rather than with ejection seats. The FB-111 bomber rendering was created for the strategic air forces of the United States as a replacement for older bombers; it received a longer wing, strengthened landing gear and equipment for carrying strategic armament. The aircraft could approach a target at low altitude and high speed using terrain-following radar, which at the time it was created was the key way to avoid air defenses.
On models with a movable wing, decide in advance whether you want to fix the wing firmly in one position or leave it movable. Fixed seating tends to be cleaner, as the wing root transitions are then easier to sand. Finish the side-by-side cockpit before closing the fuselage. The large areas of the underside call for an even coat, ideally in two passes with drying in between. Bring out the engraved lines with a thinned wash, so that they do not look hard on a light base. Fit the external stores and the tanks only once the camouflage is finished.
