An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the Japanese maker Tamiya, released as the hundredth model in its 1:48 aircraft range. The finished model is 202 mm long with a span of 297 mm. In the box you will find six figures (among them a pilot and an officer), photo-etched parts for the panels, the cabin frame and the front seat, and metal parts for the wing spar and the landing gear struts, which give the model rigidity. Three glazing options, a drop tank and skis for winter operation are enclosed. The flaps can be built extended or retracted and the entry door open or closed. Five marking options are available - among them a machine associated with General Rommel and an aircraft from the operation that freed Mussolini.
The Storch (stork) was a German liaison, observation and courier aircraft of the Second World War and remains a benchmark of short take-off and landing to this day. Thanks to full-span trailing-edge flaps and fixed leading-edge slots it could stay airborne at a very low speed: according to period figures it landed in roughly twenty meters, took off in about sixty-five and in a headwind of around 40 km/h it practically hovered in place. Characteristic features are the tall, long-travel landing gear, which took touchdowns on rough terrain, and the extensively glazed cabin with an excellent view downwards. Its most famous use came in September 1943 at Gran Sasso: a Storch landed on a short sloping meadow by a mountain hotel, took the freed Mussolini aboard and, overloaded, took off after a run of about eighty meters.
It is a modern kit with good fit, suitable even for less experienced modelers. Glue with liquid cement for plastic, which wicks into the seam by capillary action. Attach the photo-etched interior parts with super glue, and degrease the metal landing gear struts and paint them over a primer, or the paint will not hold on the metal. The extensive cabin glazing is the main visual feature - it pays to mask the frames and spray with an airbrush, or to use a masking set. Finish and paint the interior and the figures before you close the cabin up.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
