A 1:48 decal sheet with six F4F-4 Wildcat machines from 1942, from carrier decks and from Guadalcanal alike.
Responsibility details are not available.
Six machines on one sheet cover the year 1942 from carrier decks all the way to a muddy field on Guadalcanal. Three of the options belong to a Marine Corps pilot of squadron VMF-223 who became the first ace of his service; two of them are given with their serial numbers and a black 13, the third carries a white 2.
The remaining three options come from carrier squadrons. A white 18 belongs to an aircraft of VF-6 from the deck of the Enterprise in August 1942, and the other two show the commanders' machines of squadrons VF-9 and VF-41 from the Ranger, one of them rendered in the appearance it had during the November operation off the North African coast.
The F4F-4 version brought manually folding wings and six machine guns instead of four. At the price of greater weight and poorer climb, considerably more aircraft would fit in a hangar, which in 1942 mattered more than flying performance. The pilots helped themselves with a tactic of mutual cover in pairs, thanks to which they kept a favorable balance even against a more agile opponent.
The blue-gray upper finish with a light underside is typical of these machines, and white and black numbers show up well on it. The sheet also holds unit markings and serial numbers, so a portrait of one particular aircraft can be built.
Anyone who wants to build the story of one unit will appreciate that three of the options belong to the same pilot at three different moments. Side by side then stand the aircraft with the serial number from August, its successor from September and a third machine with a different fuselage number, which together show how quickly the aircraft at an island base were replaced.
