About product

Junkers F13 float version, early production — 1:48, MiniArt

An injection-molded plastic kit of the float version of the Junkers F13 airliner in its early production form, 1:48 scale, made by MiniArt. The model faithfully captures the typical corrugated all-metal skin, the cabin and the pair of floats; clear and photo-etched parts and decals for several options are included.

The real subject

The Junkers F13 of 1919 was the first series-built all-metal airliner in the world. It carried two passengers in an enclosed cabin and two crew in an open cockpit. Its cantilever low-wing structure with corrugated duralumin skin was revolutionary for its time and foreshadowed modern air transport. The float version made operation from water possible and proved itself in regions with rivers and lakes.

Building and painting tips

The corrugated skin is rewarding for emphasis with a wash and for gentle grading of metal shades. Paint the cabin before you close up the fuselage and use masks on the glazing. Line up the floats and their struts carefully so that the geometry is right; bring the metal surfaces to life by polishing or with metallic paints, thoroughly stirred.

Who the model is for

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

  • for fans of early transport and civil aircraft
  • for collectors of interwar all-metal aircraft
  • for modelers who will appreciate the unusual float version

FAQ

It was the world's first series-built all-metal airliner, from 1919, with a revolutionary cantilever wing and corrugated duralumin skin.

Instead of wheels the aircraft carries a pair of floats and takes off and lands on water, which allows it to operate from lakes and rivers.
