About product

Open exhaust nozzles for the Phantom II FG.1 and FGR.2 1:48 - a resin set from Reskit

This is an accessory set in cast resin, not an aircraft kit. It replaces the exhaust nozzles of the British versions of the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II designated FG.1 and FGR.2, and does so in the open position. The set is intended for 1:48 scale and the manufacturer is Reskit.

Why the nozzles matter on the British Phantom

The British versions of the Phantom differ from the American ones precisely in their powerplant: instead of the original engines they received Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans, which made it necessary to widen the rear fuselage and which have a distinctly different nozzle. Fitting nozzles meant for the American version to a British machine is therefore a factual error that a knowledgeable viewer spots at once. The set solves this difference with one part on each side.

Why replace the nozzles

In injection-molded kits the nozzle is formed by halves with a seam inside the duct that is hard to sand away, and the individual petals tend to be too thick because of the way the mold works. A resin nozzle has a deep duct without a seam, sharp edges to the petals and a fine texture on the outer surface. This set corresponds to the open, that is the spread position of the petals; the position changes on jet aircraft according to the engine setting and according to whether the machine is parked, so follow photographs of the situation you want to capture. Check that the set matches your kit before ordering.

Fitting and painting

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap to remove the remains of the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, never snap them, and sand the cut; when sanding resin, protect your airways and work wet if you can. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting, then the metallic shades and finally the heat staining of the petals and the soot marks with pigments or heavily thinned paints.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of the British versions of the Phantom in 1:48 scale
  • Builders who want to get rid of the seam inside the nozzle duct
  • More experienced modelers with resin behind them
  • Anyone who wants to capture the machine with the nozzle petals spread

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set that replaces the exhaust nozzles in a kit. The base Phantom kit has to be obtained separately.

The British versions received Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans instead of the original American engines. These called for a change to the rear fuselage and have a distinctly different nozzle shape.

No. The set matches the British FG.1 and FGR.2 versions. Separate sets with a differently shaped nozzle exist for the American versions.

With cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Plastic cement does not work on resin. Wash the parts free of mold release agent first and give them a coat of primer.
