A decal sheet in 1:48 scale devoted to the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt fighter. It is applied to a finished and painted model, which is not included in the package. Decals are the simplest way to give a kit that is already built an identity other than the one the box offers.
The P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the largest and heaviest single-engine fighters of its day. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine with a turbocharger set right at the rear of the fuselage — hence the bulky fuselage and the characteristic ducts running back from the engine. The D version was produced in the greatest numbers and existed in two clearly different forms: the earlier one with the fuselage spine carried back to the fin and the later one with a bubble canopy and a cut-down rear fuselage. The difference is obvious at a glance on a model, so it is worth knowing in advance which form your kit represents.
The basis is a smooth glossy surface. Paint the model, let it dry and go over it with gloss varnish — a matte surface under the decal traps air and the edges silver. Cut the decal out close to the printing, soak it in lukewarm water and wait until the film releases from the paper. Slide it into place, press the water out with a cotton swab from the center to the edges and let it set. Over rows of rivets, engraved lines and the curves of the fuselage apply a decal softener with a brush; the film will wrinkle but will settle itself, so do not touch it until it is dry. At the end, unify the whole model with matte or satin varnish.
