A wooden barrel is a timeless prop. It was used for water, wine, oil and dry goods, and in a diorama scene it works in the same form from the 19th century to the present day. Nip the parts off carefully with cutters, level the remains of the gates with a sharp knife and sand the seams gently so the texture of the wood is preserved. Glue them with a thin liquid cement for plastic. For convincing wood, a light sand-colored base works well, then thin oil or acrylic glazes drawn in the direction of the grain, and finally a dark wash in the gaps between the staves. Set the metal hoops apart with a darker steel color and light rust. Add dust and mud on the lower part with pigments.
