About product

HMS Suffolk 1:600 (Airfix)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:600 scale from the British manufacturer Airfix, from the Vintage Classics range. The model represents a British County class heavy cruiser and comes with two marking options for a faithful rendering of particular configurations of the ship. The smaller scale makes it a rewarding model for a display case or a shelf, and the kit is suitable for less experienced modelers too.

The real subject

HMS Suffolk was a British County class heavy cruiser of the Second World War. She went down in history in May 1941, when her radar allowed her to shadow the German battleship Bismarck in the Denmark Strait and to pass on her position, which let other Royal Navy units begin the pursuit. County class cruisers were distinguished by their high superstructure and their three funnels.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts away with a thin cut and glue them with modeling cement for plastic. The hull can be built complete or altered into a waterline version. Paint the decks and the superstructures before final assembly and pick out the panel lines and the details with a wash. The model shows to advantage on a suitable stand or in a sea diorama.

Who the model is for

  • Enthusiasts for Royal Navy ships of the Second World War
  • Collectors of historic plastic kits
  • Less experienced modelers and advanced builders alike
  • Anyone interested in the story of the hunt for the Bismarck

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
