The German battleship Scharnhorst in her 1943 fit in 1:700 scale from Flyhawk. A plastic kit of the ship.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the ship in her 1943 form, that is in the last year of her service. Stating the year is fundamental with ships: superstructures, radar aerials, anti-aircraft armament and the paint scheme changed so much during the war that the same ship looked different in 1940 and in 1943. The maker is Flyhawk, a brand known for fine surface rendering and a large number of small parts, which is decisive in 1:700 scale.
The Scharnhorst was a German battleship with nine main-caliber guns in three turrets. Unlike later ships she had a lower caliber but a high speed, so she suited attacks on convoys rather than a fight with an opponent of the same weight. During the war she operated in the Atlantic and later in Norwegian waters. In December 1943 she was intercepted by a British force off the North Cape and sunk.
In 1:700 scale the parts are very small, so work over a mat, with fine tweezers, and dose the glue with a point. Paint the hull and the deck separately before you fit the superstructures. Lay the waterline of the hull out with masking tape and watch that it is at the same height on both sides. Fit the small guns and the masts at the end, after varnishing. Keep the weathering restrained; in this scale a heavy wash tends to flood the detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
