About product

Ship railings of the 45 type with fixed bars, short version, three bars (photo-etch) - Eduard

A photo-etched detailing accessory from the Czech maker Eduard in 1:700 scale. The set holds etched ship railings of the 45 type with fixed bars and serves to replace the coarse plastic railings, or the entirely missing railings, on the decks of ship models. The railing has fixed horizontal bars, and in this short version it offers a shorter overall length of etched strip than the long version. It is a universal accessory: it is not intended for one particular ship but can be used on a range of plastic kits in the same scale. Please note that this is not a model but a separate detailing accessory.

What the set is for

Railings are among the features that most affect the realism of a finished ship model. Injection-molded plastic railings tend to be too thick and do not scale faithfully, so they are replaced with fine photo-etch a few tenths of a millimeter thick. The horizontal bars are fixed in this version. The 45 in the designation is the manufacturer's type mark for the railing, the number of bars gives the count of horizontal bars, and short distinguishes the amount of railing on the strip. The parts stay in the fret and are separated from it once they have been bent and glued in place.

Usage tips

Take the railing carefully out of the fret and fold it at the bend along the engraved lines, ideally with a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades. It is glued with super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied in a minute amount to the feet of the stanchions; wipe any excess glue off at once. Degrease the parts before painting, apply a primer and spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats so that the fine details are not flooded. Glue the longer straight runs in one go and shape the curves of the hull gradually. Once it has dried, the lower edge can be eased gently down to the deck and brought out with a wash.

Who the set is for

  • For ship modelers who want to replace coarse plastic railings with fine metal
  • For builds in 1:700 scale that call for faithful deck detail
  • For more experienced modelers used to working with photo-etch and super glue
  • As a universal accessory usable on several different ship kits

This is a detailing accessory, not a model. The ship kit, glue, paints and other materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a photo-etched accessory, a set of fine metal railings that you glue onto your ship model. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

The set is universal and is not tied to one particular ship. You use it on various plastic ship models in 1:700 scale as needed.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied in a very small amount is best. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on etched metal.

They differ in the overall length of the etched strip of railing. This short version holds less of it, so it covers shorter runs of deck.
