About product

Cessna Crane Mk.Ia / UC-78 1:72 - Kovozavody Prostejov (KP)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American twin-engine Cessna T-50 in 1:72 scale from the long-established Czech maker Kovozavody Prostejov (KP) of Prostejov. This boxing concentrates on the Crane Mk.Ia form, the designation used within the Commonwealth, among other things for training Canadian and Allied pilots, and on the UC-78, the liaison and transport version of the US Army Air Forces. KP today builds on modern short-run molds; the kit has fine engraving but by its character rather suits the moderately advanced. It is the same type of aircraft as the related Bobcat / JRC-1 boxing, but it differs in the military markings and the decals.

The real subject

The Cessna T-50 was an American light twin-engine utility aircraft used as a trainer for the conversion to twin-engine machines and as a light liaison and transport aircraft. It was known for its mixed wood and metal structure with plywood and fabric covering and for the nickname Bamboo Bomber. The same machine served under many designations: Crane Mk.I/Mk.Ia within the Commonwealth (notably in the Canadian training program), UC-78 as the liaison version of the US Army Air Forces, AT-17 as a trainer and JRC-1 with the US Navy. During the war it carried out a great part of the training and courier work.

Building and painting tips

Use liquid cement applied with a fine brush on the plastic and try the joints dry first. The large canopy glazing is worth masking, and a clear coat should go on only at the end; finish the interior before the fuselage is closed. Lay down a primer before painting, and the period training and liaison schemes are best created with an airbrush. Use a gloss coat under the decals and unify the surface with a final overcoat.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in training and liaison machines of the Second World War
  • collectors of Commonwealth and US Army Air Forces aircraft
  • modelers who want both marking versions (Crane/UC-78 and JRC-1) side by side
  • the moderately advanced, who get on with a short-run kit

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
