About product

DFS 230 with Argus As 014 pulsejets in 1:72 scale

A kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand RS models, focused on the experimental modification of the DFS 230 glider fitted with Argus As 014 pulsejets. This kind of subject is typical of RS models - it is a machine that never entered normal service, which is why the large manufacturers do not offer it. The exact contents of the box, the part count and the range of decal schemes are given on the packaging.

The real subject

The DFS 230 was a German transport glider of the Second World War: a simple structure with a tube frame covered in fabric, a high-mounted wing and a jettisonable undercarriage, after which the machine landed on a skid. The glider was towed to the drop zone on a cable and flew the rest of the way unpowered, which meant one single attempt at landing and no chance to correct a mistake. That is exactly what led to attempts to give the glider simple auxiliary power. The Argus As 014 is a pulsejet - a very simple form of jet propulsion with a cyclically opening intake valve grid, which is low in cost and weight but noisy and uneven in running and inefficient at low speeds. The arrangement of engines on such a light aircraft is unusual in shape and makes the model instantly recognizable.

Building and painting tips

Short-run tooling calls for a different approach than mass-production kits: expect to clean the flash off the parts, true up the mating surfaces and dry-fit everything before you reach for the glue. On tooling of this kind the locating pins tend to be weak or missing, so reinforce the joints yourself with a piece of styrene strip. Fabric over a frame paints better if you lay down a uniform base first and only hint at the rib structure with a very slight lightening between them - exaggerated contrast looks unnatural. Attach the engines after the fuselage has been painted, because they are easier to reach that way. Replace the struts and rods with thin wire or stretched sprue; the result is much finer than the plastic part.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in experimental and prototype designs.
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits.
  • Collectors of unpowered and mixed designs in 1:72 scale.
  • Builders who want something in the cabinet that nobody else has.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a very simple form of jet propulsion in which combustion happens in cycles and air enters through a grid of flap valves. The advantage is low cost and weight, the drawback noisy uneven running and weak thrust at low speeds.

Rather not. With small-series tooling you have to expect to fine-tune the parts by hand, dry-fit them and work without located joints. A modeler with some experience will manage without trouble, while a complete beginner may struggle needlessly.

The make-up of the package is stated on the box of the kit, so check it there.

Lay down a uniform base shade and hint at the rib structure only with a very slight lightening of the areas between them. Strong contrast or a heavy wash looks unnatural in 1:72 scale.
