About product

Eastern mercenaries of the middle of the 17th century in 1:72 scale

A set of unassembled plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand MARS Model. In its theme it follows on from the wider line of historical figures that this maker has long built around central and eastern Europe of the early modern period. The figures are intended to complete dioramas, to make historical formations on a base and for tabletop games in this scale. The number of figures, the number of poses and the way they are molded are not stated here.

The real subject

The middle of the 17th century was a period in the eastern part of Europe when numerous hired units operated alongside the standing forces. Their equipment was incongruous: it combined elements of local dress, captured pieces and simpler protective items. It is precisely that variety that is interesting for a modeler: in one formation it is possible to work with very different colorings of cloth, leather and metal without it looking out of place. Thanks to that, the set can be used as an accessory to other historical collections of the same scale as well.

Cleaning and painting tips

First look the figures over against the light and remove the parting lines of the mold; in 1:72 scale a fine burr at the edge of a cloak or along a barrel is more visible than it would seem. Use a sharp scalpel and a fine abrasive file, and go carefully on the thin parts. Degrease the figures before painting and apply a thin base coat, ideally sprayed, so that the details of the face are not filled. Paint from the top down and from the large surfaces to the small things. It proves worthwhile to lay down a base tone, let a darker wash run into the folds and then bring out the tops with a dry brush or a glaze. Faces and hands are enough worked out with three tones at this scale. At the end, unify the whole formation with a matte varnish, which also protects the paint during handling.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of historical dioramas of the early modern period.
  • Modelers who like painting small figures in 1:72 scale.
  • Players of historical tabletop games looking for supplementary characters.
  • Collectors of figure sets focused on central and eastern Europe.

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of figures and the number of poses are not stated here. You will find the figure on the packaging of the set.

The type of plastic used is not stated here. If it is a softer material, we recommend washing it thoroughly before painting and using a more flexible base coat that does not crack. With hard plastic the ordinary modeling procedure is enough.

In 1:72 scale there is no point in drawing out the details. A base flesh tone, a darker glaze into the eye sockets and the mouth and a lighter accent on the nose and the cheekbones are enough. From a distance the result looks stronger than an overpainted face.

Yes, 1:72 scale is widespread among historical figures, so they can be combined with other sets. Small differences in the height of figures between brands are common and usually do not matter in a formation.
