About product

Quickboost 1:72 F4U-1 Corsair (Birdcage) closed cooling flaps

A resin detail accessory in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but a replacement part: the cooling flaps on the engine cowling of the early Corsair, cast in the closed position. The F4U-1 with the heavily framed canopy known as the Birdcage is the early production version of the Vought Corsair carrier fighter, with a radial engine and the characteristic inverted gull wing. Quickboost is a line of small resin accessories from the Czech brand Aires.

Why swap a plastic part for resin

The cooling flaps form a prominent ring on the cowling of the Corsair, and in a small scale every tenth of a millimeter tells on them. Injection-molded plastic has to be thicker in these places because of the mold, the edges come out rounded and the gaps between the individual segments merge. A resin casting is made in a silicone mold, so it keeps crisper edges and a finer profile to the flaps. The closed position is an alternative to the open one, so choose according to the situation the finished machine is meant to represent.

Installation and painting tips

Wash the part first in warm soapy water, or wipe it with alcohol, so that it is rid of mold release residue; otherwise the paint holds badly on it. Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw or a cutting disc, and never snap it off. It is better to sand wet and with respiratory protection, as resin dust must not be inhaled. It is bonded with super glue or two-part epoxy, because ordinary cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin. Before spraying, use a primer suitable for resin as well as plastic, so that both materials share the same base and the shade sits right.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the early version of the Corsair in 1:72 scale
  • builders who are bothered by the thickness and soft edges of the plastic flaps
  • more experienced beginners, as working with resin is easy and only calls for a different glue
  • those who combine the accessory with further engine and cockpit details

This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a resin accessory, a replacement for the cooling flaps of the engine cowling. You have to own the base kit of the aircraft yourself.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) or two-part epoxy. Cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin, so it does not work on it.

This set has the flaps in the closed position. The open position is covered by a different accessory sold separately, and the choice is yours according to the scene you have in mind.

Yes. Wash it to remove mold release residue and apply a primer suitable for resin, or the paint will hold badly.
