Finnish soldiers in winter dress of the years 1942 to 1944 in 1:72 scale. The plastic castings will complete Nordic scenes with snow, in which figures in white smocks make the main pictorial motif.

The years 1942 to 1944 meant a period of trench stability for the Finnish army on the Karelian Isthmus and in the forests east of Lake Ladoga. The fighting shifted to patrols, raids and artillery exchanges, and the winter conditions dictated absolutely everything. The Finns therefore worked out equipment that both great powers envied them: a pull-over smock of white linen, a cap trimmed with fur, skis with bindings and sleds for carrying a machine gun and the wounded. It is precisely these elements that make Nordic figures an instantly recognizable subject.
White is the most demanding shade of all from the point of view of painting. It covers weakly, the tone of the plastic shows through it and every unevenness of the ground is visible on it. Without a thin layer of base coat, white is applied three or even four times and the result fills the fine folds of cloth, which are meant to carry the whole impression on a small figure.
The best results come from a sprayed base coat laid on in two very thin passes from a distance, so that the pigment does not settle in the hollows. The set is laid out so that the figures do not throw shadows onto one another, and it is left to dry completely between passes. With more flexible plastics it is advisable to reach for a base coat intended for flexible grounds, as a hard layer cracks when a leg is bent and peels away along with the paint above it.
The white itself is then applied rather as a very light gray tone, into which the brightest places are brought up only at the end. A purely white surface looks flat on a model, whereas a graded surface holds its shape even under the weaker light of a display case.
