A metal set from MASTER. Per the name, it contains four turned 20 mm cannon barrels that suit both the single-barrel Flak 38 and the four-barrel Flakvierling 38. This is not a gun kit, but a replacement for the plastic barrels on a model in 1:72 scale.
A four-barrel mount is unforgiving of any inaccuracy. The barrels stand side by side in a regular pattern, and it takes just one of them being slightly rotated or a different length for the whole assembly to look skewed. Plastic barrels at this scale are also molded very thin, so they have a visible seam, and removing that seam thins them unevenly. The turned metal parts are all identical, straight and already bored, so once fitted into the mount they hold the same spacing and the same angle. On the single-barrel version, the main advantage is a sharp muzzle, which cannot be made in plastic.
The 2 cm Flak 38 was a German automatic anti-aircraft cannon of 20 mm caliber with a 65-caliber barrel length. It was used on wheeled carriages, on the beds of trucks and half-tracks, and on vessels. The Flakvierling 38 combined four of these weapons into a single mount for a markedly higher rate of fire and became one of the most widely used small-caliber anti-aircraft weapons.
The plastic barrels are cut off at the root, and the holes are drilled out with a micro-drill. On the four-barrel mount, it is best to dry-fit all four barrels, check the assembly by looking straight at it from the front, and only then fix them one by one. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and coat it with a metal primer. It is usually better not to paint the muzzles and instead just chemically blacken them. Avoid wiping the mount with a cloth during weathering — the barrels are thin and bend easily.
This is an accessory for building a model, not a stand-alone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
