About product

2cm Flak 38 L/65 gun barrel, 1:72 scale (MASTER)

This is one turned metal gun barrel, not a model of a weapon or a vehicle. It replaces the plastic barrel of the German 20 mm automatic cannon of the Flak 38 type with an L/65 length. The package contains one piece. It is made by the Polish company MASTER.

The real subject

The Flak 38 was a 20 mm automatic cannon introduced as an improvement on the earlier Flak 30 type. In design it derived from the same weapon but had a higher rate of fire. It was used as a towed weapon and in mounts on chassis and trucks, and the same barrel appears in the quadruple version.

Why a metal barrel in 1:72 scale

In this scale a two-centimeter barrel comes out thinner than a pin. Injected plastic at such a diameter is molded with play, tends to have a parting line along its length and is usually slightly bent, because it twists as it cools. Turned metal is straight, concentric and has a finished bore that practically cannot be drilled into plastic at this diameter. The weapon also survives ordinary handling of the model without snapping off at the root.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off square, level the surface and drill a hole for a pin into the remainder of the mount. Fit the metal barrel dry first and check from above and from the side that it points straight. Bond it with super glue applied with a fine tip, otherwise the glue will run into the bore and block it. Degrease the metal with spirit, use a primer for metal and finish the barrel with a dark metallic shade or by chemical blackening, which on such a tiny part looks more faithful than paint.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of German Second World War vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who are bothered by a thick and bent plastic barrel
  • Those who want a real bore on a tiny weapon
  • More experienced modelers used to working with very small metal parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a base kit. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

One barrel, as the product designation states.

Yes, the bore is turned in production. That is the main reason a metal barrel is bought in 1:72 scale.

It is a general replacement barrel, not a part cut for one kit. You prepare the mounting by drilling a hole for a pin.

Degrease it with spirit, apply a primer for metal and finish with a dark metallic shade or by blackening. Without a primer paint does not hold on metal.
