This version was a stopgap solution: a place for a rear gunner, who covered the machine against attacks from behind, was added to what had originally been a single-seater. The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik was a Soviet single-engine ground-attack aircraft and one of the most heavily produced combat aircraft in history. It was designed to attack ground targets from low altitude, and an armored fuselage that carried the structure and formed part of the airframe protected both the cockpit and the engine. Early single-seat machines were vulnerable from the rear, so an improvised two-seat conversion with a gunner appeared, and it is exactly this interim form that the model captures, still before the production two-seater.
Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and sand the joints of the armored fuselage carefully. Finish the cockpit and the rear gunner's position before closing the fuselage. Lay down a primer, airbrush the Soviet green-gray camouflage and add wear, chipped paint on the leading edges and muddy effects on the landing gear, typical of ground-attack aircraft flying from field airstrips.
