A set of plastic figures in 1:72 scale from the brand HäT. The package contains forty figures in eight poses. The subject is Roman heavy infantry of the fourth century, that is, an army clearly different from the legionary of the early empire. The figures are unpainted and complement the late Roman cavalry and missile detachments of the same range.
An infantryman of the late empire wore a mail shirt over a tunic, trousers and closed footwear. The helmets were of the ridge type, assembled from several pieces, and the shield was large and round or oval. The weapons were a spear, javelins and the long spatha sword, which replaced the short gladius. A particular feature were the plumbatae, weighted throwing darts carried on the inside of the shield and thrown just before contact.
Wash the figures, dry them and spray them with a flexible primer. Paint the mail armor with a dark base and a dry brush; the shields, by contrast, should be left richly colored, as late Roman units were recognized precisely by their painted emblems. A white tunic with a colored stripe is well documented for this period and looks natural in a formation. Glue the javelins and spears on last; that will stop them bending during handling.
The figures are supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
