A finished collector model in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit: it is supplied assembled, painted and with the markings applied, so nothing needs doing with it and it goes straight into the display case. The model carries the markings of a particular machine from 1972 with a striking personal marking on the nose, which made it one of the best known individual aircraft in the history of the type.
The SR-71 was a strategic reconnaissance aircraft able to fly at more than three times the speed of sound at altitudes of around twenty-five kilometers. Its titanium alloy structure had to withstand temperatures at which an ordinary aircraft structure would soften, and the fuselage expanded so much with heat in flight that on the ground it did not seal and fuel seeped out of it. It was powered by two engines working essentially as ramjets at the highest speeds. Its protection against air defenses was not armament but plain speed and altitude.
A kit gives the modeler freedom: the colors, the markings and the degree of wear are his own choice and the result is one of a kind. A finished model, by contrast, offers the certainty of an exactly specified version, a uniform look across the whole collection and the immediate option of standing it in a display case. Collections of finished models therefore grow in series, where one machine complements the next.
