1:72 Turkish Heavy Artillery XVII century

Turkish heavy artillery, the 17th century (1:72), MARS Model

A set of plastic historical figures in 1:72 scale from the maker MARS Model. It is not one model but a set of soldiers in various poses intended to be glued together, painted and used in dioramas. Besides the gunners themselves, the set also holds guns, the period heavy pieces of Ottoman artillery. The figures are supplied as unpainted plastic on a sprue.

The real subject

Ottoman (Turkish) heavy artillery was among the feared components of the armies of the 17th century. The Ottoman Empire was famous for its massive siege guns, which played a key part in taking fortresses and towns during the Ottoman wars in central and southeastern Europe. The crews of the heavy pieces, the master gunners and the helpers at the loading made up a team that worked together, and the success of a siege depended on it. The set captures exactly these soldiers at work with the guns.

Building and painting tips

First carefully cut the individual figures and the parts of the guns out of the sprue and clean up any flash with a knife or a file. Glue the parts with a suitable glue (a cement for plastic models on hard plastic, cyanoacrylate glue on softened material). Apply a base coat (a primer) before painting, which improves the adhesion of the paint. Paint with acrylic figure paints and bring out details such as the faces, the clothing and the equipment with a fine brush and, if you like, with a wash to deepen the shadows.
