The Ukrainian brand ACE offers the American three-quarter-ton Dodge WC-51 off-road vehicle in 1:72 scale. This scale is common for aircraft, so the model makes a fine piece of accompanying equipment on an airfield scene. It is a short-run injection-molded plastic kit.
The WC-51 belonged to the extensive family of Dodge cargo and command cars that the US Army introduced from the early 1940s. The open bed with side benches carried troops and equipment, a front-mounted winch helped it out of the mud, and simple mechanicals stood up to rough handling. The nickname referred to the fact that the vehicle looked like an oversized jeep. These vehicles served on every battlefield from North Africa through Italy to Western Europe, and under Lend-Lease deliveries they also reached the Red Army, where they remained in service well into the postwar years.
With a short-run kit, expect thinner sprue gates and finer parts than you may be used to from large manufacturers, so cut them with a sharp knife or a photo-etched saw and test-fit dry throughout the build. The open cargo bed is visible, so paint it before closing it up. An olive drab finish comes to life after a thin dark wash into the panel edges and dust applied to the wheels and wheel wells.
