Westland Wessex HC.2 – top engine cooling grille 1:72 is a resin replacement panel from the Quickboost range. An accessory to the Airfix kit, not a stand-alone model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A resin casting that replaces the top cooling grille of the engine section on a model of the Westland Wessex HC.2 helicopter from the Airfix kit in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit. In 1:72 scale this panel is small but visually crucial: a model of a helicopter is looked at in a display case mostly from above, so a shallowly engraved grille in plastic stays an empty spot that the eye finds at once.
The Wessex HC.2 was the twin-turbine transport and rescue version used by the Royal Air Force. The coupled turbines in the forward fuselage needed a constant supply and exhaust of cooling air, and the top panel with its louvers is one of their most conspicuous external traces. It is also a place where dust and soot-like deposits gather on the real machine, so a well-cast grille also gives room for a patina.
First wash the resin castings in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent disappears; paint does not hold over it. Sand the original engraving away so that the part seats on a flat surface; in 1:72 a few strokes with a sanding sponge are enough, as excessive sanding would cut through the skin. Paint the grille in two steps: the base shade from an airbrush and then a dark wash, which you let run between the louvers, wiping the excess away along them. A dry brush in a lighter shade over the edges adds the rest of the three-dimensional effect. Apply the glue with a needle around the perimeter, so that it does not run into the grille and clog it.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
