302 Black

Revell 302 Black is a silk matte (satin) synthetic enamel paint in a 14 ml bottle, the shade RAL 9005. At Revell the 3xx series means precisely satin — which is why it differs from the blacks with a lower number. It is a modeling paint, not a kit.

About product

Revell 302 Black — silk matte enamel paint (14 ml)

Revell 302 Black is a modeling paint, not a kit. It is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base from the Revell Email Color range — it is not an acrylic. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix thinner or with mineral spirits and is applied with a brush and with an airbrush. The shade corresponds to RAL 9005.

How it differs from the other blacks in the Revell range

The shade is practically the same — what differs is the sheen. Revell numbers its shades by type of finish, and the three hundred series (3xx) means a silk matte, satin finish, that is a middle step between the fully matte and the fully gloss version. The blacks with lower numbers correspond to the gloss and the matte version. Satin is often the best choice for modeling use: it has a fine, silky reflection, so it looks neither like rubber (matte) nor like a piano finish (gloss), and it forgives small irregularities of application.

Use

  • Tires, rubber seals, cables and hoses on models of cars, vehicles and aircraft.
  • Vehicle and cockpit interiors, instrument panels, seats, leather elements.
  • Frames, stiffeners and technical accessories, where a gloss black would look toy-like.
  • Picking out panel lines and deep shadows before applying a wash.
  • Mixing darker tones — the black can be combined with the other shades of the range.

Painting tips

One good habit is worth recalling: a pure black looks unnaturally flat on a model. In scale a black surface really appears as a very dark gray, because even the darkest object scatters light. So if you are painting a larger area, mix in a little dark gray, or use the black as a base and go lightly over it with a dry brush and gray — the model gains depth at once and the edges start to show. Keep the pure black for small details, slots and shadows. An enamel paint stays wet longer, so it levels out well and brushes out less.

Who it is for

For every modeler — black is, together with white, the most frequently restocked paint of all. The satin version is the most versatile, because it covers tires, interiors and technical details without your having to buy a matte and a gloss one separately.

A flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the respiratory tract — work in a well-ventilated area and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

The sheen, not the shade. At Revell the numbers of the 3xx series denote a silk matte, satin finish — a middle step between matte and gloss. The blacks with lower numbers are the gloss and the matte version of the same shade.

Rather not. In scale a pure black looks unnaturally flat and hides detail. On larger areas mix in a dark gray or go lightly over the black with a dry brush and gray.

No. It is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base, not an acrylic. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix thinner, or with mineral spirits.

Yes, a silk matte finish matches the look of rubber better than full gloss. For an even more faithful result the shade can be lightened slightly with gray, or a fine dust pigment applied to the finished tire.
